Rule of Law

The Rule of Law is a pillar of democracy. The Rule of Law allows citizens to do anything that is not prohibited by law while state institutions are not allowed to do anything that is not explicitly permitted or ordered by law.

Rule of Law

Any efficient legal state ensures the rule of law for everyone – both the citizens and institutions – as well as the enforceability of law. Any democratic system has to rely on the rule of law. In other words, the state has to guarantee that law is applied to every member of society on an equal basis, and at the same time the state has to be subject to law and abide by it. This is something the Open Society Fund Prague aims to achieve by granting financial support to activities that help build the rule of law by:

  • supporting reforms designed to establish democratic institutes,
  • eliminating discrimination and its signs,
  • introducing mechanisms for monitoring government and the application of law,
  • promoting measures to abolish corruption,
  • making justice accessible to everyone,
  • supporting the introduction of mediation principles into the justice system.

The OSF Prague seeks to identify areas with insufficient rule of law, and seeks cooperation of strategic partners in order to propose strategies leading to improvements to the current system. The best strategy is then implemented by the partner organization while the OSF Prague provides financial assistance.
