Supporting the Development of Palliative Care in the Czech Republic

The project called Supporting the Development of Palliative Care in the Czech Republic, run by the OSF Prague, aims to fundamentally enhance the quality of care of terminally ill people, people dying and their families. The project builds on the long-term support that the OSF Prague gave to the Czech Hospice Movement in the previous years.

The strategic partner of the OSF Prague is a hospice civic association called The Homecoming. Partners include the School of Humanities at Charles University in Prague, the Hospice of Saint Stephen in Litoměřice, the Teaching Hospital in Brno Bohunice and top Czech experts on palliative care and related issues.

Major Goals of the project

  • to identify the major weaknesses of the existing care of dying people in the Czech Republic and obstacles to its development
  • to analyse the models of palliative care abroad and the current trends in the Czech Republic
  • to propose a strategic conception of the future development of the care of the dying an their families
  • to present the strategy for discussion and try to involve as many participants (politicians, state and local authorities, health insurance companies, academic and education institutions, media, academic as well as general public) into long-term initiative designed to fundamentally and continually enhance the care of the dying and their families
  • to promote the integration of this type of care into the Czech health care system
